Grimshaw - UF Wertheim Engineering Lab

Before launching Studio SJ in 2018, founder S. Jazmine Fugate worked for over a decade at the offices of other architects. While at Grimshaw from 2012-2015, she focused on higher education buildings and collaborated on occasion with Grimshaw Industrial Design.

Grimshaw Architects won this commission at the University of Florida to create a “nexus” for the Engineering School, financed leveraging a needed extension of the Nuclear Sciences Building.  An adaptive reuse in part, the project was substantially more constrained as a public university building than the Duke University’s Brodhead Center until the formation of a public/private partnership and a generous gift.  Fugate played a pivotal role in the programming and schematic design before leaving to join DFormA.

Construction cost: undisclosed; Area: 86,000SF; Status: schematic phase 2015, construction complete 2021
